The Sasa Trail is the most direct and adventurous route to Wagagai Peak (4,321m) — the summit of Mount Elgon. It begins at Budadiri near Mbale and climbs through traditional villages, bamboo forests, and open moorlands to reach the spectacular Caldera, one of the largest volcanic craters in the world.

ITINERARY

Trekking Time: 5–6 Hrs | Distance:9 Km | Elevation Gain: +1,650m

  • Morning transfer from Mbale town (about 1 hour) to Budadiri Gate (Mount Elgon National Park HQ). Meet your guides, porters, and ranger for registration and briefing. The trek starts with a steep ascent through local farmlands and traditional Bagisu villages, offering a rich cultural experience. You’ll pass through Bamasaba communities, famous for coffee farming and traditional circumcision rituals (Imbalu).
  • Continue ascending through bamboo forest to Sasa River Camp, located near a clear mountain stream. Enjoy your first dinner under the stars.
  • Overnight: Sasa River Camp.
  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner.
  • Trekking Time: 5–6 Hrs | Distance:6 Km | Elevation Gain: +600m

  • After breakfast, continue your climb through the bamboo and heather zone where the scenery opens up with sweeping views of the valleys below. The trek today is shorter but steep in sections, allowing time for acclimatization and photography.
  • Arrive at Mude Cave Camp, one of the park’s most famous campsites, surrounded by giant groundsels and lobelias. You’ll have time to rest, explore nearby Jackson’s Pool, or enjoy hot tea as the sun sets over the mountain.
  • Overnight: Mude Cave Camp.
  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner.
  • Trekking Time: 7–8 Hrs | Distance:12 Km| Elevation Gain: +821m / Descent -821m

  • Start early (around 6:00 am) for the summit day. The trail climbs gradually through the moorland and rocky alpine terrain leading into the Caldera, one of Africa’s largest and most impressive mountain features. Reach Wagagai Peak (4,321m) — the highest point of Mount Elgon! Take in the 360° panoramic views of Uganda, Kenya, and the vast crater below. After celebrating and photos at the summit, descend carefully to Mude Camp for a hot meal and well-deserved rest.
  • Overnight: Mude Cave Camp.

  • Descend along a scenic connecting trail toward Tutum Cave, crossing moorlands and forests rich in birdlife and wildflowers. The descent is gentle and passes through pristine montane forest. Tutum Cave Camp sits beside a tranquil waterfall — a magical spot to spend your last night in the mountain wilderness.
  • Overnight: Tutum Cave Camp.

  • Trekking Time: 5 Hrs | Distance:10 Km | Descent: -885m

  • Trek through forest trails toward Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre, exiting the park. From here, drive to Sipi Falls for a celebratory lunch overlooking the cascading waterfalls.
  • Optional: Take a short Sipi Falls walk or coffee tour before returning to Mbale or continuing your journey.
  • Meals: Breakfast & Lunch.
