MOUNT KILIMANJARO RONGAI ROUTE OVERVIEW

The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It offers a quiet wilderness experience, gentle gradients, and great acclimatization opportunities. The trail passes through remote forests, open moorlands, and alpine deserts before joining the Marangu Route at Kibo Hut for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

Because it receives less rainfall, the Rongai Route is ideal during the rainy seasons (April–May and November).

ITINERARY

Distance: 8 Km | Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours | Habitat: Rainforest To Moorland.

  • After breakfast and a drive from Moshi or Arusha, arrive at Rongai Gate for registration. Begin your hike through the lush rainforest, with chances of spotting colobus monkeys and forest birds. The path gradually ascends to Simba Camp, offering your first distant views of Mawenzi Peak.
  • Overnight: Simba Camp.
  • Meals(Lunch & Dinner).
  • Distance: 9 Km | Hiking Time: 6–7 Hours | Habitat: Moorland.

  • Continue climbing through open moorland with heather and erica trees. The scenery opens up, and the air becomes cooler. You’ll reach Second Cave Camp, where you can enjoy views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding wilderness.
  • Overnight: Second Cave Camp.
  • Meals: Lunch & Dinner.
  • Distance: 6 Km | Hiking Time: 4–5 Hours | Habitat: Moorland.

  • The trail continues up a steady ascent toward Kikelewa Camp, set near a sheltered valley. As you gain altitude, vegetation becomes sparse, and views of Mawenzi’s jagged spires dominate the horizon.
  • Overnight: Kikelewa Camp.

  • A short but steep hike leads up grassy slopes to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, located beneath the impressive cliffs of Mawenzi Peak. This is one of the most beautiful camps on Kilimanjaro. The afternoon is reserved for rest and acclimatization hikes around the tarn.
  • Overnight: Mawenzi Tarn Camp.

  • Cross the lunar-like alpine desert between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks via the “Saddle,” a broad, barren expanse. Arrive at Kibo Hut, your base for the summit attempt. Rest early and prepare for the midnight ascent.
  • Overnight: Kibo Hut.

  • Distance: 22 Km | Hiking Time: 10–14 Hours | Habitat: Arctic Zone To Moorland.

  • Begin your summit push around midnight, climbing slowly on switchbacks toward Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim. Continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa! After photos and celebrations, descend to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest.
  • Overnight: Horombo Hut.
  • Meals: Breakfast,Lunch & Dinner.
  • Distance: 20 Km | Hiking Time: 5–6 Hours | Habitat: Rainforest.

  • Descend through lush rainforest trails, enjoying the final scenic walk. Arrive at Marangu Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for celebration and rest.
