MOUNT KILIMANJARO SHIRA ROUTE OVERVIEW

The Shira Route is one of the older and more scenic trails on Kilimanjaro’s western side. It begins at a higher altitude on the Shira Plateau, which was once a volcanic crater. The trek offers magnificent views, varied ecosystems, and a gentle ascent that helps climbers acclimatize properly before attempting the summit.

Because the starting point is already high, this route is best suited for trekkers with prior high-altitude experience or good physical fitness.

Best Time: January–March, June–October.

  • Route: Shira Route.
  • Starting Point: Shira Gate (3,400m).
  • Summit Point: Uhuru Peak (5,895 M / 19,341 Ft).
  • Ending Point: Mweka Gate (1,640m).
  • Difficulty: Moderate To Challenging.

TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trek across the ancient Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic sections.
  • Witness stunning views of Mount Meru, Shira Cathedral, and Kibo Peak.
  • Climb the iconic Barranco Wall, a thrilling and rewarding adventure.
  • Experience varied ecological zones—from moorland to alpine desert to glaciers.
  • Reach the Roof of Africa (Uhuru Peak, 5,895m) for an unforgettable sunrise.
  • Fewer crowds compared to Machame and Marangu routes.
  • Excellent acclimatization and photographic opportunities.

WHY CHOOSE SHIRA ROUTE

  • The route starts high on the Shira Plateau (3,500 m), offering spectacular views from the very first day. Trekkers enjoy open vistas of Kilimanjaro’s western slopes, with fewer people on the trail compared to other routes.
  • The Shira Route features a variety of ecosystems — from alpine meadows and volcanic ridges to dramatic valleys and glaciers. It joins the Machame Route near Shira Camp, allowing trekkers to experience the iconic Barranco Wall and Stella Point.
  • Although it starts at a higher elevation, the route’s longer itinerary (7–8 days) provides time to adapt to the altitude. The “climb high, sleep low” pattern enhances acclimatization, improving summit success rates.
  • Because it’s less popular than Machame or Marangu, the Shira Route offers a quiet and serene experience, especially during the first few days before merging with other trails.
  • Starting at a high altitude makes this route best suited for trekkers with prior acclimatization or high-altitude experience, who want a scenic and challenging adventure away from the crowds.
